Kitten in a mitten.
A sweet little kitten warms up in a mitten.
This is a typical mitten from Sweden, called "Lovikka vante".
I have written this for PSP 8.
I have made all the selections
you'll need.
Get them here.
Make a new folder, call it kitteninmitten and zip them up there.
The zip also contains a band and two patterns. Zip the band up in your PSP
Image folder
and the patterns in your PSP Patterns folder.
By request, I have made the selections also
for PSP 7. Get them here.
I hope you can follow the tutorial, even though it is written
for PSP 8.
You will also need filter Paint Engine.
Start with a New Image, 350 x 500, transp,
16 mill. New Raster Layer.
Call the layer Backrim.
Check the Edit Path that you have the right selection-folder choosen.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, backrim.sel.
Set your Materials window to pattern.
Flood Fill with pattern lo_knit1. Keep it selected.
Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Raster Layer. Call it Mitten.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, mitten.sel.
Flood Fill with pattern lo_knit2. Keep it selected.
Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Raster Layer. Call it Thumb. Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten,
thumb.sel.
Flood Fill with color #B3AFAF.
Selections, Modify, Contract by2.
Flood Fill with lo_knit2. Angle 345. Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
Retouch Tool, Smudge Brush. Smudge the
upper end a bit.
So you won't see the darker line.
New Raster Layer. Call it Fold. Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten,
fold.sel.
Flood Fill with lo_knit2. Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Layer. Set your Material Palette to
Solid color. Color #07538D.
Click on Pen Tool. 
Make
these settings.
Now you have to make a diagonal line.
This is what I used.
New Layer. Make another line with red color,
#F33A4A,
just beside the blue one.
New Layer. Make another line with yellow color, #EFE101, just beside the red one.
Place them like this.
Close all layers except those three color layers. Layers, Merge, Merge Visible.
Layers, View all. Duplicate this layer three times. Place them like this.
Close all layers except these four color layers. Layers, Merge, Merge Visible.
Duplicate, Image, Mirror. Place it on top of the other colors.
New Layer. The same colors. Make three
horizontal lines. Put them at the centre of the pattern,
on top of eachother. Duplicate this layer three times. Place them like
this.
Close Layers backrim, mitten, thumb and
fold.
Layers, Merge, Merge Visible. Call the layer Pattern.
Stand on Layer Fold. Magic Wand. Click at a
corner of the picture.
Keep it selected. Stand on layer Pattern. Delete.
Now the edges are nicely fitting the fold. Deselect. Effects, Blur, Soften.
Just to make the thread look a little softer.
New Raster Layer. Call it Upperrim. Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten,
upperrim.sel.
Flood Fill with pattern lo_knit1. Keep it selected.
Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout the same as on layer Fold. Deselect.
Close Layer Backrim. Layers Merge, Merge Visible.
Stand on Layer Backrim. Get the band you
got in the zip.
Copy and Paste it as a New Layer. Place it on the left side.
New Layer. Airbrush, size 4.
Make a tassel with color #F4EFE5.
New Layer. Make another tassel with the yellow, red and blue you used in the pattern.
Close Layer Backrim. Layers, Merge, Merge Visible. Call it Mitten.
That was the mitten, now to the kitten.
We will make all the parts before smudging them.
Stand on Layer Backrim. New Layer. Call it
Body.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, body.sel.
Flood Fill with solid color #9D9690. Keep it selected. Filter PaintEngine as
below.
Selections, Float. Effects, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Head.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, head.sel.
Flood Fill with color #BEB3AD. Keep it selected. Filter PaintEngine as before.
Selections, Float. Effects, Cutout as before, but change Blur to 20. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Ears.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, ears.sel.
Flood Fill with color #9D9690. Keep it selected.
Selections, Float. Effects, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Innerears.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, innerears.sel.
Flood Fill with color #7C7670. Keep it selected.
Selections, Float. Effects, Cutout as before, but set Opacity to 25. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Eyespots.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, eyespots.sel.
Flood Fill with color #EBE6E2. Deselect. Effects, Blur, Gaussian Blur5.
New Layer. Call it Eyesyellow.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, eyesyellow.sel.
Flood Fill with color #A7B559. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Eyelids.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, eyelids.sel.
Flood Fill with black color. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Eyesblack.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, eyesblack.sel.
Flood Fill with black color. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Glints.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, glints.sel.
Flood Fill with white color. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Nose.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, nose.sel.
Flood Fill with color #78635C. Selections, Float. Effects, 3D, Cutout as before. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Muzzle.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, muzzle.sel.
Flood Fill with color #78635C. Deselect.
Stand on Layer Mitten. New Layer. Call it
Paws.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, paws.sel.
Flood Fill with color #BEB3AD. Keep it selected. Filter PaintEngine as before.
Selections, Float. Effects, Cutout as below.
Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Toes.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, toes.sel.
Flood Fill with color #78635C. Deselect.
New Layer. Call it Whiskers.
Selections, Load from disk, kitteninmitten, whiskers.sel.
Flood Fill with color #78635C. Deselect.
You have got this picture so far.

Close all layers except Layers Eyespots,
Eyesyellow, Eyelids. Eyesblack, Glints and Nose.
Layers, Merge, Merge Visible. Call it Face.
Now to the smudging. If you Flood Fill your
Background with white color,
you will see much better your smudging.
Stand on Layer Body. Smudge brush.
Zoom the picture to see better.
Smudge very gently with tiny strokes
outwards. On the body you only have to
smudge the small part that you can see on the picture.
If you have smudged too much, so the colors
have disappeared,
add some more
color and smudge again.
Stand on Layer Head and do the same.
Stand on Layer Ears and do the same.
Stand on Layer Innerears and do the same. Just a little here.
Stand on Layer Paws and do the same.
Stand on Layer Toes. Soften Brush size2,
Hardness 50. Soften the toes a bit.
Then lower the Opacity to 80 in your Layers Palette.
Stand on Layer Mitten. Smudge Tool. Draw
some on the thumb-outlines to blur them a little.
But be careful there. Do it with a light hand.
Now you have a look at your picture. Do you
like what you see?
Or do you want to change anything? If you do, do so now.
When you are satisfied, close Layer
Background. Merge, Merge Visible and you are done.
